Abstract painting is a language of movement and memory. For over seven decades, Ray Rogers has translated rhythm, music, and atmosphere into sweeping gestures across monumental canvases. Each work is the record of an event rather than its illustration, capturing the precise moment when thought meets motion.
This exhibition, Ray Rogers Gesture in Time, brings together paintings shaped by a lifetime of dedication to Abstract Expressionism and inventionism. Rogers rejects preconception, working directly on the canvas with a physicality that mirrors the improvisational flow of music. His works are both immediate and enduring, revealing an artist fully immersed in the act of creation.

Ray Rogers (b. 1933, Kansas City, MO) is an American painter whose practice spans more than seventy years. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he studied with Robert Motherwell and George McNeil at the height of Abstract Expressionism. His large-scale canvases—often six by eight feet—are created using a direct, unaltered painting method that foregrounds gesture, rhythm, and the immediacy of artistic response.
Rogers has exhibited at Max Hutchinson Gallery (NYC), Bennington College (VT), Bennett College (NY), Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and the University of California, Berkeley. His work is held in several private collections and was most recently shown at the 2025 Hamptons Fine Art Fair. He lives and works between Brewster, New York and Sedona, Arizona.
