Born in Tochigi, Japan, Koetsu Kakinuma is a contemporary painter recognized for luminous watercolor works that blur the boundary between observation and imagination. His paintings are rich with atmosphere, layered detail, and a quiet sense of wonder, often exploring themes of memory, fantasy, nature, and emotional stillness.
Kakinuma earned his Bachelor of Arts in Image Arts and Science from Musashino Art University in 2010 before relocating to New York City in 2016. Since then, he has become an active presence within the city’s contemporary art community, exhibiting in galleries including The Patriot and O’Flaherty’s in New York, as well as art fairs such as Superfine Art Fair in both New York and Miami. His work has also appeared in alternative exhibition spaces including schools and cafés, reflecting a practice grounded in accessibility and everyday connection.
Working primarily in watercolor, Kakinuma embraces a meticulous and immersive process, building translucent layers to create glowing surfaces and dreamlike environments. His compositions often evoke the emotional texture of remembered places rather than literal scenes, balancing realism with fantasy. Influenced by the natural landscapes of his childhood in Tochigi and early exposure to immersive fantasy worlds through video games like Trials of Mana, his paintings seek to create portals into unfamiliar yet emotionally resonant spaces.
Rather than overwhelming the viewer with spectacle, Kakinuma’s work invites slow looking. Light, reflection, texture, and silence become central subjects within the paintings themselves. Through this approach, he creates works that feel suspended between reality and “the other side,” encouraging viewers to reconnect with a sense of calm, curiosity, and possibility.

Inspired by imagery shared by fashion editor Hamish Bowles, Hamish and Dahlia merges vintage interiors, reflective surfaces, and ethereal atmosphere into a carefully constructed watercolor composition. Kakinuma was drawn to the warmth and dreamlike quality of Bowles’ imagery, particularly scenes featuring ornate dining rooms, fireplaces, and layered decorative spaces.
The work became an important turning point in his artistic process. While creating the reflective lens effects and glass-like surfaces within the painting, Kakinuma realized the importance of restraint within detail-oriented work. By introducing carefully placed highlights and allowing areas of openness to emerge, the piece reflects a growing confidence in balance, atmosphere, and visual rhythm.
