Carolina Castro is an emerging artist and bookmaker whose practice spans printmaking and bookbinding. She is completing her bachelor’s degree in human ecology at the College of the Atlantic and is attending the North Bennet Street School for bookbinding. Carolina has professional experience in a print studio and currently focuses much of her artistic energy on binding and printed work that considers the figure, absence, and presence.
Her practice blends technical craftsmanship with personal inquiry. Raised in an atheist household yet surrounded by religious extended family, Carolina developed an early fascination with spiritual imagery and the quiet symbolism of religious spaces. These themes have returned with new depth as she explores questions of identity, belief, and belonging through the printed page.

Carolina’s work reflects a layered relationship with religion and morality. It moves between intimacy and distance, reverence and questioning, and is rooted in both familial memory and personal reckoning.

Description
This diptych explores an odd, distanced relationship to religion. Raised outside of faith but surrounded by family members for whom belief was central, Carolina found herself drawn to its symbols and stories. As she later confronted her own queer identity, these early impressions became more complex. The works engage themes of morality, family, and the hope to honor the people who shaped her, even while forging an independent spiritual path.
The prints speak softly but carry weight, suggesting both reverence and resistance. Through precise copper plate etching and chine collée, they reveal how the personal and the sacred can coexist in fragile tension.
