Bio:
Duncan Richards, an interdisciplinary artist, social worker, and folk Witch, weaves together spirit work and art through a unique psychodynamic process. Her pieces, often rooted in surrealist and animist perspectives, create visually meditative symmetries that reach beyond the material, inviting viewers into spaces where ancestral echoes and esoteric traditions blend with the digital and technological present. With her work featured in notable galleries throughout Brooklyn and collaborations with the Kolaj Institute in New Orleans and the National Folklore Collection at the University of Dublin, Duncan crafts a world where art and spirit intersect.
Her practice embraces assemblage and collage to bring forth imagery that explores both the seen and unseen, drawing from her own legacy and a reverence for cultural folk traditions. Through her art, Duncan honors connections to ancestral guidance while pushing into future realms of expression. Residing in Brooklyn, she continues to explore these liminal spaces, transforming her work into visual séances that bring the past and future into dialogue.

Description:
Lighthouse serves as a beacon for ancestral connection, inspired by the universal role of light in guiding spirits and honoring those who came before us. This assemblage piece combines a horseshoe crab shell, glass, and a vintage Edison bulb, each element ritually consecrated to foster communication with ancestors. A touch-activated lamp filled with sand from a lighthouse site provides an invitation for users to add their own ancestral materials, creating a deeply personal, interactive focal point. Duncan’s process included daily ritual practices, imbuing the work with a spiritual resonance that transcends the physical form. Inspired by a personal family story and the enduring presence of horseshoe crabs, Lighthouse invites viewers to connect with their own lineage and contemplate the tidal forces that bridge life and death. Through Lighthouse, Duncan explores themes of remembrance, legacy, and the interconnectedness of all beings.
