Artist Profile: Aubrey Maurer

Aubrey Maurer is a sculptor and ceramic artist whose work emerges from an intimate relationship with the natural world and the emotional landscapes tied to memory, place, and transformation. An alumna of Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, Maurer divides her time between Lancaster and Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, where the surrounding environment continues to shape her artistic vision. Her practice explores the quiet poetry of organic forms, drawing inspiration from the forests, creeks, meadows, and overlooked textures of the land she grew up within.

For Maurer, nature is not simply subject matter but a living archive of personal experience. Childhood memories spent beside creeks, beneath towering oak trees, and among familiar terrain continue to inform her sculptural language. Through ceramic forms that feel both delicate and enduring, she reflects on humanity’s evolving relationship with the environment and the emotional resonance landscapes carry across generations. Her work invites viewers to reconnect with their own sense of place and to consider the fragile beauty that exists within the natural world.

Maurer’s artistic process embraces experimentation, resilience, and reinterpretation. Working primarily with clay and hand building techniques, she often incorporates unconventional methods to support her sculptural forms. Her practice has evolved through moments of failure and reinvention, allowing broken or incomplete elements to become catalysts for new work rather than discarded remnants. This openness to transformation has become central to her artistic philosophy, shaping work that feels intuitive, layered, and emotionally grounded.

Description

Ascension reflects Aubrey Maurer’s ongoing exploration of growth, renewal, and emotional connection to the natural world. Inspired by the landscape surrounding her parents’ land in Pennsylvania, the sculpture draws upon memories of flowering plants, aging trees, and the quiet wonder found within familiar environments. Soft pink and yellow tones evoke nostalgia and youth, transforming the work into both a personal reflection and a meditation on humanity’s relationship with nature.

The sculpture emerged through a process of reconstruction and reinterpretation. Maurer incorporated ceramic flower forms salvaged from a previous work that did not fully survive the kiln, choosing to reimagine these fragments rather than abandon them. Supported by a three tiered sculptural base and surrounded by smaller floral elements, the composition becomes a study in resilience and adaptation. Experimental techniques, including the use of balloons for structural support during the building process, allowed the work to evolve organically while maintaining a sense of delicacy and movement.

In Ascension, Maurer transforms failure into renewal. The work speaks to the possibility of growth through disruption, revealing beauty not through perfection but through persistence, memory, and reinvention.
