Artist Profile

Moira Kelly (b. 1999, Troy, New York) is a painter based in Baltimore, Maryland working primarily in oil on canvas. Her work moves between abstraction and figuration, exploring how light, atmosphere, and shifting forms shape perception.

Kelly studied Fine Arts at Hudson Valley Community College before earning her BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in 2023. She is currently an MFA candidate at the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work has been exhibited at the William Benton Museum of Art, Greenpoint Gallery in Brooklyn, and The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

Her paintings investigate perception, consciousness, and the tension between presence and absence, using layered color and shifting spatial depth to suggest images that emerge and dissolve within the surface.

Annunciation originates from a digital collage of photographs of sunlit trees and is derived from a larger landscape painting. The composition isolates a moment where light breaks through the forest, inspired by Grafton Lakes State Park in New York.

The title references Kelly’s Catholic upbringing, though she no longer practices the faith. In this work, the forest becomes a cathedral beyond organized religion, where moments of light suggest encounters with the sublime.
