Artist Profile: Spencer Patrick

Spencer is a Brooklyn based painter originally from Columbiana, Ohio. Working between abstraction and figuration, his paintings explore how contemporary life shapes our relationship with environment, technology, and spirituality. Through expressive figures placed within highly constructed spaces, Spencer examines the tension between the organic human body and the artificial environments we inhabit.

Spencer earned a BFA in Visual Communication Design from Kent State University with a minor in painting. This dual training in design and fine art informs his approach to composition, allowing narrative structure and visual clarity to guide his paintings while maintaining the freedom and spontaneity of painterly gesture.

While working professionally as a senior graphic designer in New York City, Spencer continues to develop his studio practice as a painter. His work merges strong compositional design with expressive mark making, producing images that feel both carefully structured and emotionally immediate.

Painting under the moniker PARCHPAK, Spencer often centers his compositions around a solitary figure navigating spaces that feel familiar yet constructed. Modern interiors, curated outdoor settings, and urban environments appear alongside abstracted human forms, creating visual narratives about how people adapt to increasingly artificial surroundings.

His work frequently reflects the paradox of contemporary life. We surround ourselves with objects, technologies, and environments designed to create comfort, yet these same systems often distance us from the natural world. Through the quiet vulnerability of his figures, Spencer invites viewers to reflect on that tension and consider what it means to search for meaning, connection, and stillness within the structures of modern life.

Description

Pray explores the intersection of spirituality and modern life. The painting depicts a solitary figure kneeling in prayer within a contemporary bathroom, a setting that contrasts the urgency of the act with the artificial nature of the environment.

Spencer’s composition highlights the paradox of seeking spiritual connection within spaces built entirely from manufactured materials. The tiled floor, interior design elements, and constructed surroundings serve as a timestamp of the present moment, situating an ancient act of devotion within the visual language of modern life.

The figure appears vulnerable yet resolute, kneeling directly on the cold tile without regard for comfort. This immediacy suggests a moment of desperation or sudden realization, when the impulse to reach toward something greater overrides the concerns of environment or self awareness.

Through expressive brushwork and the tension between organic form and structured space, Spencer reflects on how spiritual practice persists within contemporary contexts. The painting considers how our relationship with prayer and belief continues to evolve even as the environments around us become increasingly artificial.

In Pray, the quiet gesture of kneeling becomes a moment of reflection on faith, vulnerability, and the human instinct to seek guidance beyond ourselves.
