Artist Profile: Jovan Stockhammer
Jovan Stockhammer is an abstract painter from Sunset Park, Brooklyn. His work is guided by intuition, translating memory and sensation into form. A second-generation Serbian-German American, he moves between Brooklyn and East Chatham, New York, carrying with him both the density of the city and the stillness of open landscapes. That dual rhythm defines his paintings.
Stockhammer began making art through instinct long before studying at the Art Students League. His process remains spontaneous and unguarded. Each painting begins as an act of feeling rather than design. Color, line, and gesture unfold as conversations with emotion, memory, and the unknown. He speaks of abstraction as a language for what words cannot hold, a way to explore experience without needing to resolve it.
His influences include Basquiat, Miró, Pollock, Warhol, Haring, and Masson, artists who embraced immediacy and imperfection as creative truth. Yet Stockhammer’s own vision is quieter, more personal. His paintings hum with sincerity. They ask the viewer not to look for meaning but to experience presence.

Description
The Busboy began with a moment of observation in Belgrade, where a restaurant worker’s rhythm and energy lingered in Stockhammer’s mind long after the encounter. The painting captures that memory as motion, using layered paint and line to mirror the pulse of daily work.
The composition is alive with gesture. Bold marks seem to move faster than the eye can follow, yet the energy never feels chaotic. It is measured, human, and deeply felt. The piece becomes a meditation on movement and endurance, a study of how presence can fill a space without ever standing still.
Stockhammer’s abstraction transforms a fleeting impression into something permanent. The Busboy is not a portrait of a person but of an instant that refuses to fade.
