Tibor Matijas is a self-taught acrylic painter whose vibrant, surreal landscapes are rooted in memory, travel, and imagination. Originally trained as a journalist, Tibor spent four years working aboard a cruise ship, an experience that profoundly shaped his worldview. It was during this nomadic period that he discovered painting—a practice that quickly became his passion and primary pursuit.
Now based in New York, Tibor channels his global perspective into rich, symbolic compositions that blend magical realism with environmental and existential themes. His work invites viewers to step into dreamlike spaces where nature reclaims its dominance, and the boundaries between the real and the surreal dissolve.

This work is featured in May 2025: Echoes of the Earth – Environmental Art, curated by Mekhi Deleon. The exhibition explores the intersection of art and environmentalism, spotlighting artists who challenge, honor, and reimagine our relationship with the planet.
In Death of AI, Tibor Matijas presents a haunting, surreal vision of nature’s quiet triumph over technology. Moss creeps over wires, flora grows through metal bones, and sunlight filters gently through a forest reclaiming its space. With hidden symbols of human excess woven into the undergrowth, Matijas compels viewers to confront the consequences of disconnection—from nature, from each other, and from ourselves.
Exhibition Dates: May 1 – May 8, 2025
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 1 | 6 PM – 8 PM
Location: Bushwick Gallery, Brooklyn, NY
Artist Statement
“For me, art should be the start of important conversations. I want to inspire people to look within themselves and question what they see there. Currently, I am blending the metaphorical and the metaphysical in a way that reflects the growing imbalance between humanity and nature. My work is a reflection of that tension—and a reminder that time, like nature, cannot be controlled.”

Light cuts through a forest in the moment between ruin and rebirth.
In Death of AI, Tibor Matijas paints a surreal, dreamlike vision where nature quietly reclaims what technology has abandoned. Look to the foreground: moss overtakes a skull, machine parts rust into the earth, and mushrooms bloom where wires once ran.
The scene is vivid, almost luminous. Yet within the beauty lies a quiet warning—about cycles of dominance, collapse, and renewal.
Matijas’s brushwork blends magical realism with ecological allegory, inviting us to consider how life endures beyond the structures we build.
Death of AI is not a portrait of devastation. It is a meditation on resilience, reminding us that even in endings, new roots take hold.
