Artist Profile: Jonathan Westfield

Jonathan Westfield is a painter and silk screen artist whose work examines societal repetition, transformation, and the tension between progress and regression. Raised in northern New Jersey, he studied design at Lehigh University and Parsons School of Design, developing a practice that merges pattern, abstraction, and introspection. His work has been exhibited in New York City and throughout the coastal Northeast, resonating with audiences drawn to his exploration of cycles—both personal and collective.

Through bold, continuous patterns and layered compositions, Westfield reflects on the ways we evolve, stumble, and rebuild. His work does not offer easy resolutions; instead, it acknowledges that growth is not linear but a constant negotiation between past and future.

  • Description:

Blue Hour captures the stillness between endings and beginnings, a space where transition is felt but not yet fully realized. The layered, screen-printed composition mimics the repetitive cycles of time, loss, and reinvention, using shifting hues to suggest movement within restraint.

Westfield’s process—a meticulous balance between control and unpredictability—mirrors the human experience of change. The repeated forms in Blue Hour are not static; they evolve subtly, reflecting how we return to the same patterns, reshaping them each time. The deep blues and muted contrasts evoke the fleeting moment before night fully settles or day fully begins, emphasizing the liminality of personal transformation.

This piece serves as a reflection on grief, memory, and self-reconstruction, honoring the past while embracing the inevitability of what comes next.

“Composed of intricate, continuous lines, the piece suggests both movement and structure, a rhythm that ebbs and flows like the cycles of time. The screen-printed forms create a sense of repetition without exact replication, echoing the way experiences, emotions, and memories resurface in altered shapes.

The work exists in an in-between space—the fleeting period just before night fully settles or before dawn takes hold. The interwoven forms shift subtly, giving the impression of quiet motion, as if the composition is in a constant state of becoming. There is a balance between order and spontaneity, reflecting the way we navigate personal and collective change, returning to familiar structures but never in the same way twice.

Each mark is deliberate yet organic, a blend of precision and unpredictability. The composition resists being static, drawing the viewer into its layered patterns and inviting them to trace its evolving movement.”
